Pinewood Derby

I. CAR

 A. The car must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year (after August 1, 2004), and must be the car that placed in the pack race. The car should be substantially built by the Scout. Parental supervision in the construction of the car is encouraged. Any cars with wet paint or dripping glue will be disqualified.

 B. The body of the car must be made from the block of wood provided in an official B.S.A. PINEWOOD DERBY Kit (Cat. No. P1622). Wheels may not be designed to ride upon the guide strip of the track. If the front of the car is designed to gain an unfair advantage at the start or interferes with a fair start, the car will be disqualified. No part of the car should extend beyond the starting line.

 C. Only official B.S.A. Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles may be used. Axles must be firmly attached to the car. Axles may be deburred and polished. Wheels may be slightly sanded to remove casting burrs. This light sanding is the only wheel modification allowed. Beveling, tapering, thin sanding, wafering, or lathe turning of wheels or axles is not permitted. “Speed wheels and axles” are not allowed.

 D. Mold projection defects on wheel treads may be removed by sanding. The wheels may not be sanded to enhance performance, ie, no reduction of tread width or beveling of wheels allowed. If excessive wheel sanding is detected the car will be disqualified. The wheels must be attached to the car with the axles provided in the kit. No cars will be accepted in the PINEWOOD DERBY where bearings, washers, springs, or spacers are used as part of the wheel assembly.

 E. Lubrication - only graphite powder  may be used to lubricate wheels. (Warning - other lubricants may damage the plastic wheels and keep them from turning freely.) Once the car is weighed in, it may NOT be re-lubricated.

IMPORTANT:  For the safety of all participants and the regular users of this building, any graphite must be applied ONLY in the designated work area. No graphite may be applied anywhere else inside the building. Doing so will disqualify entrant.

 F. Length, Width, and Clearance -

·         The total weight of the car may not exceed 5 ounces.  The readings of the official scale will be considered final.  No loose material will be permitted of any kind in or on the car.  Anything falling off the car after the races start will not be reattached—with the exception of wheels and axles.  Wheels and axles may be re-attached.

·         The maximum width of the car, including wheels, may not exceed 2.75 inches. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1.75 inches so the car will clear the guide strip. Wheel base (distance between front and rear axles) may not be changed from the official kit.

·         The maximum length of the car may not exceed 7 inches.

·         The motion of the car may not be mechanically aided (motor, springs, rubber bands, etc. are prohibited).

·         Minimum clearance between bottom of the car and track shall be 3/8" so the car will clear the guide strip.

·         Maximum height shall not exceed 2.75 inches in order for the car to safely pass under the finish line.

The Pinewood Derby officials may disqualify any car that in their determination is not in compliance with the spirit of the PINEWOOD DERBY race.
